Faerie Home Companion II:
All the Best from Lake Lesbionne

June 17 and 18, 2000
Sundin Hall, Hamline University
St. Paul, Minnesota

We returned to that famous Minnesota community "up north," Lake Lesbionne, where One Voice Mixed Chorus was preparing to attend GALA Choruses Festival 2000 in San Jose, California.

We heard from the band Simpática, and checked in with that hard-working detective Gay Noir. Kit and Kat joined us for their ever-popular "Truck Talk." We watched the chorus test a variety of fashion statements as they planned their costumes. And, of course, we heard the news from Lake Lesbionne, where the men are manly, the women are handy, and the children are exceptionally well-adjusted. Todd Moe, former news announcer for Minnesota Public Radio, was our guest host.

The program included the following:

Make Our Garden Grow is from Leonard Bernstein's Candide.

Minnesota Chapsticks by Peter Berryman is a fun listing of all of the state's towns to a familiar tune.

A Rhyme (One Dad, Two Dads...) by Becky Dale, one of the movements from a piece commissioned for One Voice by the Walker Art Center in 1994.

In the Mood by Joe Garland, a familiar "big band" piece and a dance number, of course.

Past Life Melodies, written by Sarah Hopkins, uses simple melodies that reach deep in the soul. The work utilizes a concept called harmonic-overtone singing, which is as ancient a technique as singing itself. From our January 1998 concert.

Summer Nights by Warren Casey and Jim Jacobs, from the musical Grease.

Buffalo Gals by Alice Parker. A crowd favorite and another dance number.

Peace Is, an anthem written by Fred Small.

Cloudburst where composer Eric Whitacre superimposes a rainstorm over the vivid poetry of Octavio Paz. From our January 1999 concert.

Birdland, a syncopated jazz tune by Joseph Zawinul.

...and more, of course!
